Pope Francis receives the new Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults from Director of Veritas, Maura Hyland
On Thursday, 26 June, Maura Hyland, Director of Veritas, presented Pope Francis with a copy of the newly published Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults.
The presentation followed the 7 a.m. Morning Mass celebrated by the Pope Francis in the chapel in Santa Marta. In his homily Pope Francis said:
‘And this is why the people followed Jesus, because He was the Good Shepherd … He was a pastor! A pastor who spoke the language of His people, who understood, who spoke the truth, the things of God: He never negotiated with the things of God! But He spoke in such a way that the people loved the things of God. That’s why they followed Him.’
Pope Francis thanked Ms Hyland for presenting him with a copy of the Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults and expressed his hope that it would promote the work of Adult Faith Formation throughout the Church in Ireland. Continue reading
Director of Veritas, Maura Hyland, to meet Pope Francis and present him with the new Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults – Ireland’s first ever Catechism.
Director of Veritas, Maura Hyland, has been invited to present Pope Francis with a copy of the Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults following his General Audience on Wednesday, 25 June.
Speaking about the presentation, Maura Hyland said ‘Since he stepped out onto the balcony above St Peter’s Square on 19 March 2013 and greeted those gathered with the words ‘Buona sera’, Pope Francis has been capturing the imaginations and hearts of people throughout the world. His humility, his use of images and symbols and his ability to reach out to people have spoken volumes. It is a great honour for me to meet Pope Francis and to present him with a copy of the Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults’.
Published by Veritas, Ireland’s leading religious publisher and retailer, the Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults is a new publication from the Irish Episcopal Conference. The result of several years’ work, this Catechism is a call to renewal of faith among adults, at a time when people may be questioning whether the good news of Jesus Christ applies to them. It responds to the recommendation in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that Episcopal Conferences would develop ‘local catechisms, which take into account various situations and cultures, while carefully preserving the unity of faith and fidelity to catholic doctrine’. The Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults will be published on Thursday, 12 June. This is the first local catechism for Ireland. Designed to complement the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is adapted for an Irish audience and written in accessible, easy-to-understand language. Each chapter begins with a story or lesson of faith, featuring many notable figures from Ireland, such as Edmund Rice, Catherine McAuley and Nano Nagle. Those chosen are people whose lives or actions illustrate a particular Church teaching.
An often overlooked aspect of publishing any book is the ‘behind the scenes’ work of designing the cover. Veritas Art Director, Lir Mac Cárthaigh, who created the cover for the Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults has written this short piece to take us through the process:
“The Irish Catholic Catechism for Adults is a hugely important publication for Veritas, and has been in development for almost two years. Getting the cover right was vital – it was necessary to differentiate the book from the full Catechism of the Catholic Church and to show that it was produced specifically for Irish readers. The initial brief was simple: the book needed to look Christian – ideally using an image of Jesus – and it needed to look Irish. Continue reading
